Way of Qigong by Kenneth Cohen

Many new books in Complementary Medicine have been added to the library collection over the past year. You might want to read "The Way of Qigong" before the lecture by Kenneth Cohen on April 5 here at the Health Center. The book is shelved at WB 541 C678w 1997 near several other books on Chinese and energy medicine. The library also holds Cohen's "Honoring the medicine : the essential guide to Native American healing," WB 890 C677h 2003.

If the catalog tells you the book is already checked out, you may call the library at 679-2839 to have a "hold" placed on the book and we'll notify you when it's ready.

The National Academies Press announces the Discovery Engine

by Arta Dobbs, M.S.L.S.
Collection Management Librarian

The National Academies Press (http://www.nap.edu/)
publishes significant works on behalf of the National Academies (http://www.nationalacademies.org/ ), including the Institute of Medicine (IOM) (http://www.iom.edu/), and also makes these works freely available for online reading through the Open Book interface.
http://www.nap.edu/info/site.html
Several new advances in the online website have been made operational. The Discovery Engine, a Find More Like This button, Research Dashboard and Reference Finder all work to upgrade the inadequate linear search tool.

The Discovery Engine searches more than 500,000 book pages from nearly 3,000 formal publications produced by The National Academy of Sciences, The National Academy of Engineering, The Institute of Medicine, and The National Research Council, plus more than 100,000+ Web documents from The National Academies: current projects, testimony, press releases, news documents, etc.

Research Dashboard presents the searcher with the top key terms extracted from within each online publication. Clicking on a term searches sorts and displays each instance of that term within the publication. Each term can be searched further, outside the publication in the NAP website as well as presenting users with a structured search and links for a Google/Yahoo/MSN search.

Click on this link to find more information about the exciting advances at the National Academies Press website.

PubMed Update: My NCBI Includes Filters

by Nancy Carter-Menendez, MLS
Information & Education Services Librarian

Filters that group search results by areas of interest are now available as part of My NCBI. The groups are displayed on tabs adjacent to the All (total results) tab just above the search results. From PubMed sign into My NCBI to select up to 5 filters. There is a short list of the most commonly selected filters and from there a link to the full list of filters. In order for filters to be active during a search session you must be signed into My NCBI. Unlike Limits, filter results are not cumulative – for example, if you select the filters English and human and then click on the human tab, the citations retrieved will be in English as well as in other languages. For additional information about My NCBI and filters go to http://www.nlm.nih.gov/pubs/techbull/jf05/jf05_myncbi.html or http://www.nlm.nih.gov/pubs/techbull/jf05/jf05_technote.html#review_filter .
