New Books on the NCBI Bookshelf

The list of books available in the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) Bookshelf has recently been increased by the addition of several titles: NCBI Short Courses, Inflammatory Atherosclerosis: Characteristics of the Injurious Agent, Molecular Biology of the Cell, and the Genetic Landscape of Diabetes [Internet]. The Bookshelf is a growing collection of biomedical books that can be searched directly by going to the ‘Bookshelf’ database at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?db=Books&itool=toolbar, or by going to PubMed and then linking to the Books database. Books are also linked to terms in PubMed abstracts, so when viewing an abstract you can select the "Books" link to see phrases within the abstract hyperlinked to book sections. If you have any questions, please contact the Library’s Reference Desk at 679-2942.

Did You Know?

You no longer have to guess at the journal abbreviations in PubMed. To help users more easily identify the journal in their PubMed results, a new feature allows you to hover your mouse over the journal abbreviation in order to see the full title of the journal. Check it out! Contact the Reference Desk for any questions about this or other PubMed features.

Pubmed on Tap

by Nancy Carter-Menendez, MLS
Information and Education Services Librarian

PubMed on Tap is a means of accessing PubMed via a handheld device such as a Palm Pilot or Pocket PC. NLM recently reported that “…the server that supports PubMed on Tap was compromised in mid-March and was taken off line, along with several other systems. Our security team has been very busy determining what must be done to insure system and network security, and rebuild the server to these standards. Unfortunately, they are not able to tell with any certainty when the system will be reinstated."

As an altenative, try PubMed for Handhelds which in addition to PubMed searching, offers PubMed’s Systematic Reviews subset and the Clinical Queries filters.
