Librarian Creates New Blog

A blog was created this July by Kathleen Crea, Information & Education Services Librarian at UCHC. It is entitled "EBM and Clinical Support Librarians@UCHC. It is hosted on the Wordpress site at http://creakysites.wordpress.com/

The purpose of the blog is to allow students, librarians, faculty and researchers to view postings, videos or announcements on Web 2.0 technologies as they relate to medical education, clinical practice, student rotations and also "knowledge management" or library-related news.

For example, under "Blogs I Like", there is a link to http://scienceroll.com, written by Bertalan Mesko, a medical student in Hungary. Scienceroll is an excellent example of how social networking technologies can combine in a "mash-up" of medical news, relevant video, commentaries (from both the blogger-author and the readers out there), interviews and opinions of biomedical researchers, students and practitioners, such as a recent posting about the first medical simulation or "PBL" session held on SecondLife, on 8-9-07. Read about it at: http://creakysites.wordpress.com/2007/08/10/first-medical-simulation-in-second-life-aug-9-2007/
If you have material which you believe would be beneficial to post on the EBM and Clinical Support Librarians@UCHC blog, please forward them to the site administrator, Kathleen Crea, at crea@nso.uchc.edu.

Library Director's Report - Welcome, Class of 2011!

By Evelyn B. Morgen, MSLS, AHIP
Director, Lyman Maynard Stowe Library

Welcome to a new academic year at the University of Connecticut Health Center! We look forward to meeting all incoming graduate, medical, and dental students – and welcoming back those who are returning. Here are some highlights of the student services we offer:

Academic Computing Support:
Ben Smith and Nancy Mainelli in the Computer Education Center (CEC) of the library are available to provide technical support to all students. They can help you find answers to any questions about your PDA, your laptop, or software. You’ll find them on the main floor of the library at the end of the hall to your right as you come in. We also added another printer to that area, and are implementing new software that should help reduce wasted paper.

Student Support Librarian Program:
A new student support librarian program for all students will begin this year. Every student will be introduced to one of the librarians here who can be the “go to” person for any questions you may have about library services or best sources of information. You’ll hear more about it during orientation.

Shafer Study Rooms:
These 24/7 shafer study rooms are still available whenever the library is closed. This summer we added a sound-masking system so you will be less distracted by noise from other students.

School of Medicine PDA Initiative
The School of Medicine is expanding the PDA program so that second year students will begin using them this year. They will be used for SCP in the fall, and in PBL during the CMPS section that begins after January. Recommended models are listed on the CEC web page. Here’s a link to the document: http://library.uchc.edu/departm/cec/files/pda2007.pdf We’ll offer orientation classes and overviews soon.
We hope to see you often! Please know that no question is considered too small or unimportant, so please “bother us” with questions whenever you have them!
