SEPTEMBER 2008 DATABASE CLASSES
SEARCHING AND ACCESSING HEALTH SCIENCE INFORMATION RESOURCES
Target Audience: Physicians, Researchers, Faculty, Staff and Students
Location: Computer Education Classrooms – Lyman Maynard Stowe Library
These classes will provide hands-on training and demonstrations by UCHC Reference Librarians. Each class will outline quick and efficient means of searching and managing citation information for the eight databases listed below. There is no charge for these classes but enrollment is limited to UCHC personnel only. A Web-based bibliography and database manager. Like EndNote and EndNote Web, it allows users to create their own personal database by importing references from text files or online databases. This class will also cover how to utilize these references in writing a paper, automatically formatting the paper and generating the bibliography.

Discover EndNote Web, a free web-based version of EndNote available through the Web of Science database. This hands-on class will cover how to create an account, import data directly, import data from saved files and manually entering data, no downloading of software necessary. Tips for editing and organizing your database, retrieving records from your database and creating your paper and bibliography will be covered also.
PSYCHIATRY SOURCES ONLINE

A new class, offered for the first time in February 2008. UCHC users have access to two world-class psychiatry and psychology databases: PsycInfo and Psychiatry Online. This class is an introduction to the literature for psychiatrists, counselors, mental health and nursing professionals.

Scopus is a database for UCHC library users, providing online searching of 27 million records covering articles from 14,000 peer-reviewed titles from more than 4,000 international publishers.

EVIDENCE-BASED MEDICINE (The Cochrane Library)

Learn how to search the Cochrane Library to locate the best available evidence-based information on the effectiveness of healthcare interventions.
PUBMED – BEYOND THE BASICS

This 90-minute class focuses on searching PubMed with greater precision. Topics covered include using Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), finding information in specific journals, locating systematic reviews or EBM articles with “Clinical Queries”, and storing search strategies on NLM’s server for re-execution at a later date. Attendees are expected to be familiar with the basics of PubMed.
WEB OF SCIENCE / JOURNAL CITATION REPORTS

The Web of Science (WOS) database indexes citations from 8,000 major health and social science journals published between 1994 through 2008. WOS is used by UCHC faculty to determine who has cited their work ("cited reference searching"). Also covered in the class is Journal Citation Reports (JCR), a unique, comprehensive source which compiles and ranks citations, article counts and journal impact factors taken from 7,500 scholarly or technical journals from 3300 publishers in 300 academic disciplines. JCR indexes data for years 2003 through 2007.
