October 2008 Database Classes

SEARCHING AND ACCESSING HEALTH SCIENCE INFORMATION RESOURCES
Target Audience: Physicians, Researchers, Faculty, Staff and Students
Location: Computer Education Classrooms – Lyman Maynard Stowe Library

These classes will provide hands-on training and demonstrations by UCHC Reference Librarians. Each class will outline quick and efficient means of searching and managing citation information for the eight databases listed below. There is no charge for these classes but enrollment is limited to UCHC personnel only. Thursday, October 7 - 10:30 to 12:00
Bibliographies made easy. Learn how to use this tool to search online bibliographic databases, organize the references and build lists of cited works automatically. It includes additional features such as unlimited storage capacity (number of references), Customized views & displays, Work Offline (anytime/anywhere), Local Personal Files and Documents, and many more.

PSYCHIATRY SOURCES ONLINE
Wednesday, October 8 - 10:30 to 12:00
A new class, offered for the first time in February 2008. UCHC users have access to two world-class psychiatry and psychology databases: PsycInfo and Psychiatry Online. This class is an introduction to the literature for psychiatrists, counselors, mental health and nursing professionals.

PUBMED – BEYOND THE BASICS
Thursday, October 9 - 1:00 to 2:30
This 90-minute class focuses on searching PubMed with greater precision. Topics covered include using Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), finding information in specific journals, locating systematic reviews or EBM articles with “Clinical Queries”, and storing search strategies on NLM’s server for re-execution at a later date. Attendees are expected to be familiar with the basics of PubMed.

CLINICAL DECISION SUPPORT TOOLS
Tuesday, October 14 - 10:30 to 12:00
Learn how to search the best available evidence-based information by using clinical decision support tools like FirstSearch, DynaMed, Evidence Essential Plus (formerly InfoRetriever), Cochrane Systematic Reviews on the effectiveness of healthcare interventions, and others.

WEB OF SCIENCE / JOURNAL CITATION REPORTS
Wednesday, October 15 - 10:30 to 12:00
The Web of Science (WOS) database indexes citations from 8,000 major health and social science journals published between 1994 through 2008. WOS is used by UCHC faculty to determine who has cited their work ("cited reference searching"). Also covered in the class is Journal Citation Reports (JCR), a unique, comprehensive source which compiles and ranks citations, article counts and journal impact factors taken from 7,500 scholarly or technical journals from 3300 publishers in 300 academic disciplines. JCR indexes data for years 2003 through 2007.

Thursday, October 16 - 1:00 to 2:30
Scopus is a database for UCHC library users, providing online searching of 27 million records covering articles from 14,000 peer-reviewed titles from more than 4,000 international publishers.

GOOGLE SCHOLAR/What it is, What it isn't
Wednesday, October 22 - 10:30 to 12:00
Since 2004, the search engine known as Google Scholar scours the Web for links to scholarly papers, books, abstracts, technical reports and conference proceedings in broad academic disciplines. Google Scholar is a great way to find materials in the "hidden web" but should be searched in conjunction with our Uconn subscription databases and journals. Learn more about how and when to use Google in this new class.

DRUG RESOURCES FOR YOUR MOBILE DEVICE
Thursday, October 23 - 10:00 to 12:00
This is a two part class on Lexi drug resources for your handheld mobile device. The first part will go over installation of the Lexi software on your mobile device and the second part will be a demonstration and hands-on exercises of the Lexi database. The Lexi-Select package includes 17 drug related databases including drug information, drug interactions, natural products, medical calculations and more.

RefWorks
Friday, October 31 - 1:00 to 2:30
A Web-based bibliography and database manager (whereas EndNote is a Desktop software for PC and MAC). This class covers how to create a personal database by importing references from text files or online databases and using these references in writing a paper, automtically formatting the paper and generating the bibliography.
