Hartford Medical Society Historical Library: Open House – Thursday, September 10th, 3-5 pm

Please join us for the grand opening of the Hartford Medical Society (HMS) Historical Library, now located in the sub-basement, room LSB-016. This non-circulating library contains historical books, pamphlets, journals, manuscripts and artifacts. It is a wonderful resource for those interested in the evolution of health care in this country.

The Open House will start at 3:00 in the café area of the Lyman Maynard Stowe Library with a scavenger hunt and tours. At 4:00, in the Low Learning Center, there will be light refreshments and a lecture given by Lynn Laskowski and Francis Coan of Tunxis Community College: Mark Twain and the “Majestic Literary Fossil”. They will talk about a set of medicinal dictionaries, owned and reviled by Mark Twain, now housed in the HMS library. These will be on display for the event. A promotional poster is available at: http://library.uchc.edu/hms/pdf/HMSGrandOpening3.pdf

In the exhibit case in the LMS library there will be an exhibit of artifacts and materials from the HMS collection: Medicine – 1793 vs. 1893, showcasing the advances made in the intervening 100 years.
