Friday, October 20 1:00 to 2:30
Scopus is a database for UCHC library users, providing online searching of 27 million records covering articles from 14,000 peer-reviewed titles from more than 4,000 international publishers.

PUBMED – BEYOND THE BASICS
Friday, October 27 1:00 to 2:30
This 90-minute class focuses on searching PubMed with greater precision. Topics covered include using Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), finding information in specific journals, locating systematic reviews or EBM articles with “Clinical Queries”, and storing search strategies on NLM’s server for re-execution at a later date. Attendees are expected to be familiar with the basics of PubMed.

WEB OF SCIENCE / JOURNAL CITATION REPORTS
Tuesday, October 31 10:30 to 12:00
The Web of Science (WOS) database indexes citations from 8,000 premiere journals published internationally for years 1994 through 2006. WOS indexes topics in medicine, social sciences and humanities. It can be used by authors to determine who has cited their work (“cited reference searching”). The instructor will also demonstrate use of Journal Citation Reports (JCR), a comprehensive and unique E-resource that allows a searcher to evaluate or compare individual journal titles using citation data drawn from 7,500 scholarly and technical journals published in 60 countries by over 3,300 publishers. Citation and article counts are important indicators of how frequently current researchers are using individual journals. By tabulating and aggregating citation and article counts, JCR offers a unique perspective for faculty who are interested in comparing or evaluating publications in 300 academic disciplines for years 2003, 2004, and 2005.

3D Tooth Atlas

The 3D Tooth Atlas is a software-based virtual environment that allows users to examine the morphology of the human dentition in full three-dimensional clarity. Each tooth can be rotated in three axes, rendered completely transparent to expose the structures of its complex anatomy, and studied from all angles as well as from the inside out. This version includes models of all 26 primary teeth with interactive slide bar to reveal their eruption by age; highly annotated segments of the mandible and maxilla (ie, bones, teeth, and pulp) that can be viewed independently or together from any orientation (eg, through the sinus); three-dimensional views of all anatomic structures relevant to endodontic access and treatment; a mock National Board exam provided by the ADA; annotated view of the entire skull; and the official, unabridged edition of the Glossary of Prosthodontic Terms. The latest version also features a number of new enhancements, including an expanded library of teeth, now comprising more than 300 interactive three-dimensional models; a larger collection of skull models, including several with mixed dentition; an expanded pedodontics section; and animated drawings and movies that demonstrate techniques for file cleaning of root canals.

“Endorsed by the American College of Prosthodontists as the highest quality educational program.”

Changes in UpToDate

UpToDate has made changes in their Table of Contents. The Table of Contents will still appear, but the topic reviews within the Table of Contents will no longer be live links. This change will not affect the usability of UpToDate, as all of its content is still easily accessible via the main search box. The change started Monday, December 5th.

The following are a few search tips that will help you view topic reviews previously accessible through the Table of Contents.

Patient Information:
To view patient information handouts, type in the words "patient info" in the main search box and you will see all of the patient information topics available. To narrow your search, use the "narrow search results" button and type in the disease or condition.

Drug Information:
To view information on a medication, type in the name of the medication, either brand name or generic in the main search box. For each medication you will see a number of drug information topics including adult information, pediatric information, and patient level information. UpToDate also offers international, as well as natural drug information.

UCHC Library print journal cancellations for 2005

by Arta Dobbs, M.S.L.S.
Collection Management Librarian

Electronic and online journals, in their infancy from 1992-1999, were once deemed to be experimental and a risky business for publishers. Free with print and/or with lowball prices, offered to entice institutional library subscribers and personal subscribers to register and use the electronic versions, have for the last several years been rapidly replaced with escalating prices, with no ceiling in sight.

Users have caught on to the ease of use of having journals delivered right to the desktop and are demanding everything offered by libraries to be online. Online journals are now a big business and publishers are cashing in on the demand from the captivated audiences. Consequently, library budgets worldwide are struggling to keep up with the escalation in prices. In addition, currency fluctuations, once favorable to US academic libraries, have in the last several years, been very unfavorable, increasing prices yet again.

The UCHC library subscribes to journal titles with the following breakdown by publication origin, 30% domestic and 70% foreign. This is a direct result of recent consolidations and buyouts of domestic publishers by foreign publishers, significantly decreasing the number of domestic (USA) publishers and publications. Many USA based professional and scientific societies, also now choose to publish with foreign publishers, and these trends show no signs of reversing.

The following print journals subscribed to by the UCHC Library have been cancelled for 2005. Those journal titles whose subscriptions have been completely cancelled, will continue to be available to users through our Document Delivery program. The remaining titles have been resubscribed for 2005, but in the online format only, with no print backup, which will result in no access in the event of a site crash or Internet unavailability.

PubMed Update

By Nancy Carter-Menendez, MLS
Information & Education Services Department

Cubby

Stand by for news about the exciting enhancements to Cubby that will be announced in the near future.

The New/Noteworthy link located on the blue sidebar on the left hand side of the PubMed screen under Entrez PubMed is an excellent way to keep up to date on PubMed news and changes.

In addition to the UCHC Library newsletter now available as a blog, other excellent resources providing updates about PubMed are the NLM Technical Bulletin and the NER’estah, the newsletter of the New England Regional Medical Library.

The most recent issue of the NLM Technical Bulletin, 2004 November-December, is now available at http://www.nlm.nih.gov/pubs/techbull/current_issue.html and the list of issues of the NER’estah is at http://nnlm.gov/ner/newsletter/index.html.

2005 MeSH

Year end processing has been completed by NLM and the 2005 MeSH is now in use. An article highlighting the additions, changes and deletions to the 2005 MeSH vocabulary is available in the NLM Technical Bulletin at http://www.nlm.nih.gov/pubs/techbull/nd04/nd04_mesh.html.

Index Medicus

The NLM will cease publishing the printed Index Medicus (IM) with the December 2004 edition (Volume 45). For the last 125 years the National Library of Medicine has been publishing the monthly printed Index Medicus. In 1836 Library of the Office of the Surgeon General of the Army (the present National Library of Medicine) was established. From about 1865 to 1895 John Shaw Billings, MD, (1838-1913) served as director of the Surgeon General’s Library, and was responsible for the publication of the printed Index Medicus beginning in 1879. According to NLM, use of the print IM has declined since MEDLINE became available in 1971.
